A strong SEO program helps the right customers find your roofing company. As customers use AI tools to research roofing problems and compare contractors, keeping your visibility strong requires ongoing research, measurement, and improvement.
At Top Roof Marketing, we bring 13 years of roofing SEO experience, our own technology, and direct access to Google Analytics and Google Search Console data. The resources from developing 100+ roofing-specific websites give us a detailed foundation for understanding what attracts attention, where performance changes, and which improvements deserve closer investigation.
Recent research from Rankability identified a few things that we find intriguing. Its findings examine how traditional search rankings relate to the pages AI platforms reference when answering questions.
As always, we combine outside research with our roofing-specific data and campaign experience to make better decisions for our clients.
What Rankability Found About AI Search

Rankability’s research compared 1,645 AI citation observations with 916 traditional search observations across 31 topics. Three findings are particularly interesting:
- Among pages in the first three traditional search positions, 98.9% appeared somewhere in the AI citations.
- 55.2% of the leading 10 AI citations came from pages outside the traditional top 10.
- 72.8% of AI-cited pages had no referring domains pointing directly to the individual page.
Strong traditional rankings were associated with inclusion in AI answers, while AI platforms also cited pages outside the traditional top 10. The study covered multiple search engines and AI platforms, with many queries asking for “best” or “top” results.
We’re using findings like this to keep strengthening the fundamentals while investigating how these additional discovery avenues affect our clients.
We Have Roofing-Specific Data to Work From

Outside research gives us a broader view of search. Our own data helps us evaluate what is happening within roofing.
As mentioned, we have access to Google Analytics and Google Search Console data from more than 100 roofing websites. Alongside our campaign history and ranking reports, this data lets us investigate the searches bringing people to websites, the pages receiving attention, and how performance changes over time.
That depth is a huge advantage.
If an article gains visibility, we can look more closely at the subject, the page, and the searches involved. If an established service page loses ground, we have historical information to help investigate the change.
Our team can compare patterns across roofing websites while accounting for differences in services, markets, competition, and the work performed.
Strong Traditional SEO Still Deserves Attention
The relationship between traditional rankings and AI citations gives contractors a good reason to keep investing in the foundations of their websites.
Your site needs to explain what you do, where you work, and why someone should consider your company. Those explanations need to stay accurate as your services, experience, and priorities develop or change. That applies to your website and to online directories like Yelp and your Google Business Profile.
When was the last time you audited your online presence? These are specific problems we can address.
Google’s ranking update history also shows why this work requires continued attention. Five core or spam updates occurred between March and August 2026, followed by another spam update beginning in September.
An update does not explain every change in a website’s performance, but it does reinforce the need to monitor results and investigate what is happening rather than relying indefinitely on an old checklist.
Better Technology Helps Us Use That Information
Top Roof Marketing’s internal program manages more than 3,000 articles each year and draws on 13 years of roofing SEO history. At that scale, memory matters. Our content intelligence system reviews each client’s sitemap, published topics, priority services, targeted markets, and keyword opportunities before recommending what’s best: whether to write something new, refresh an old page, expand a winner, or avoid overlapping search intent.
AI makes that analysis faster, but it does not replace judgment. Our team still verifies services, locations, statistics, and technical claims; corrects repetition or drift; selects useful internal links; checks originality; and completes the final review. This approach follows Google’s guidance on generative AI content, which warns that scaled production without added value can violate spam policies and urges publishers to focus on accuracy, quality, and relevance.
For a closer look at the work behind these systems, watch our 2026 SEO system update from our Top Jump Marketing division.
The purpose of this investment is to make better decisions and carry them out more consistently. Sometimes that means developing new content. Sometimes an existing page deserves more attention.
Our job is to determine which action provides the most value for that particular contractor.
Give Search Systems and Customers Something Useful to Find
A roofing contractor has hands-on experience that can make a website more helpful.
Consider a restoration project. The full story includes the roof’s condition, the owner’s concerns, the inspection findings, and the reasons behind the recommendation. Photos can document preparation and repairs. An explanation can help the next owner understand why the coating was only one part of the work.
Those details give a prospective customer something concrete to evaluate.
They also give us stronger material than another general statement about quality workmanship. We can connect the contractor’s experience to questions building owners actually ask.
Reliable supporting information matters as well. When we use a statistic or technical claim, we look at who produced it, when it was published, what was measured, and whether it applies to the situation being discussed. Government sources, manufacturer documentation, trade organizations, and clearly identified company records all serve a useful role.
The contractor contributes by sharing current service information, project photos, customer questions, licenses, certifications, and case-study details. These resources help us explain why the company is qualified for the work it wants.
Genuine reviews, accurate Google Business Profile information, and complete third-party profiles add further context. Together, they help connect the website’s claims to an identifiable business with documented work.
Keep the Technical Foundation Working
Useful information also needs to be accessible.
Our work includes crawlability, internal linking, XML sitemaps, canonical signals that identify preferred page versions, clear business information, and structured data that accurately reflects the page.
These details help organize the website and make its content easier for search systems to find and interpret.
We also provide Markdown copies and llms.txt resources as supplemental accessibility layers. However, we do not present those files as guaranteed ranking factors. Google’s guidance on AI search features states that special AI markup is not required for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Measure What Actually Appears
Traditional rankings and AI citations represent different kinds of visibility. A report of one cannot fully describe the other.
Our in-house reporting records the ranking position and the exact webpage or Business Profile that appeared across the first five pages. Organic results and Map Pack visibility are reported separately because they behave differently.
This is a key part of how we figure out what needs attention.
If an unexpected page appears for an important service, we can examine its content and relationship to the intended service page. If website visibility improves while inquiries remain weak, we can look at the message, proof, contact options, and what happens after someone responds.
Rankings vary by location, device, timing, and personalization. We study standardized snapshots and longer trends to build a clearer picture of performance.
AI visibility adds questions about whether the company is mentioned, which sources are referenced, and whether the information is accurate. Those observations need their own context rather than being treated as interchangeable with a conventional search position.
Keep Learning From the Work
Our process is ongoing: research, build, measure, and improve.
We compare campaigns that gained, held steady, or declined. We look for repeatable patterns, test focused changes, and reinvest in work the evidence supports.
SEO is not a controlled laboratory. An improvement following a change deserves investigation, but it does not automatically prove that the change caused the result. Our broader base of roofing websites, historical data, and campaign experience helps us evaluate those situations with more context.
This takes sustained effort. It also gives our clients the benefit of work that continues beyond the initial setup.
The objective is to help the right prospect find the contractor, understand its capabilities, and take the next step. That requires attention to the website, credibility, inquiries, sales materials, and follow-up as well as search visibility.
Put the Experience and Resources to Work
Top Roof Marketing’s advantage comes from the combination of roofing specialization, 13 years of SEO experience (including helping multiple clients appear on Google’s first page for hundreds of different search terms), behind-the-scenes data from more than 100 roofing websites, custom systems developed from constantly measuring real-world success, and people who continue reviewing and improving the work.
We are using those resources together to give our clients the most competitive position we can.
Rankability’s research provides insightful outside evidence. Our own data and experience help us decide what to investigate and how to apply what we learn. Our ongoing work turns those decisions into changes on client websites and in the systems supporting them.
